Tutoring program sharpens student skills during summer

The PAL recently conducted a pilot program of summer tutoring that helped a variety of students at different grade levels improve core learning skills during summer break. The results were impressive - several of the students increased their competencies in reading and math by a full grade level.

The PAL is considering continuing the program this fall. Participating families must meet certain requirements to qualify. If you are interested, request information below..

Tailored learning for students

The PAL tutoring Instructors conducted assessments of each student at various stages of the program, and employed a variety of techniques for skills development in students of different ages. This tailored approach to student learning made the difference.

PAL considers continuing program

The summer tutoring program featured certified Kansas teachers using a state-approved curriculum, which was aligned with Kansas assessment guidelines. The program was led by Cathy FIthian, an experienced school administrator in Kansas City, KS.

"I'm so impressed with the kids at the PAL," said Cathy Fithian, the program administrator for the PAL summer tutoring program. "They're so eager to learn and they really made great progress in a short amount of time."

Fithian, a local elementary school principal, led a team of teachers from area schools. Students at the PAL ranged from 8-18, and worked alongside each other in the PAL's computer lab. The majority of students made significant progress during the five-week program. Most students' assessments showed an increase of a half-grade to a full grade level in standard subject competencies.

The PAL is exploring ways to continue the program throughout the school year. Additional qualified staff would need to be added to make the program available at no cost to families. If you'd like to support this program, please consider
