Stretch your imagination and learn new skills when you enroll in PAL programs. With the guidance of adult mentors, your child will have support at every step of their journey.
Archery offers kids a combination of physical and mental skill development. Our young archers gain a sense of accomplishment from goal setting and sportsmanship. The Archery program at PAL-KCK is led by two police officers certified to teach archery through the Kansas Wildlife and Parks as part of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). As a solo sport, archery instills focus, discipline and confidence. The program also opens the door to other PAL-KCK programs that share the fundamentals of hunting, fishing and camping while educating participants about safety, local conservation and wildlife. Class instruction size is limited, so inquire below about availability.

To enroll in this program, parent/guardian must complete PAL membership application and request Art as a preferred program.
The art program at the PAL cultivates a student’s natural interest in art and helps him or her improve skills, techniques and knowledge of drawing and painting. Our local artist instructor mentors each student, helping them understand subjects, techniques and perspective in their drawings and paintings. Students also learn about famous artists’ styles, and they are introduced to careers in art and the entrepreneurship of art as a marketable craft. Many of our students have gone on to pursue art disciplines in college, and our program can help them prepare for college entry in art studies. Program classes are held on-site at the PAL, in the inspiring upper level (formerly the choir loft of the church).
The computer lab at the PAL gives students access to adult mentors who help them with homework after school or during summer evenings.
Many kids at the PAL lack computers and/or internet connectivity at home, which inhibits their familiarity with digital tools and mastery of computer skills. This program is available during PAL’s standard operating hours.

The KCK Police Athletic League pioneered the nation’s first Driver’s Education Program for teens that is completely free for students and run by police officers. This amazing program is helping to save lives in and around Kansas and mentoring students through the process of earning a driver’s permit and a Kansas license. In our program, students will be taught by police officers who help them through the entire licensing process, including registering at the DMV, learning how to maintain good practices of vehicle and road safety, and obtaining vehicle insurance (required by KS law). Since the program’s inception in 2021, the PAL has successfully trained more than 200 new licensed drivers.
The PAL KCK program is a direct response to a dire community need: motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for ages individuals 15 to 18 in Kansas. Local high schools no longer offer driver’s ed courses. In our urban community, 75% of eligible teens do not have a license and many drive without a license, incurring fines and court fees, and worse – endangering themselves and others.
The program is designed for low-income teens in Wyandotte County who cannot afford private driving schools instruction. The PAL program is not only an economic solution, it's also an effective crime prevention strategy that helps youth avoid driving illegally and violating the law.
In lieu of fees, the PAL requires students to complete 30 hours of community service, plus the mandatory class and road classes, to earn a Kansas driver’s license.
The program is in high demand and currently has a wait list. If you are interested, and you are a Kansas resident, please join the PAL using the button below and join the waitlist. Priority is given to students who are eligible for free or reduced lunch.

To enroll in this program, parent/guardian must complete PAL membership application and request Fitness & Boxing as a preferred program. Must be a resident of Kansas.
As one of the original programs at the PAL-KCK, fitness remains one of the most popular among all ages. Some of the participants may choose to add boxing training to their programs here, but it’s completely optional.
Fitness training includes a broad range of cardiovascular activities, such as running, jump rope, climbing and weight training. Kids may start as young as age 8, to establish a fun fitness routine and keep them active, indoors and out. Police officers and other adult mentors supervise training sessions. For kids who choose to begin boxing training, our professional coaches help them learn fundamentals and advance in their training.
Boxing is not only great for physical fitness, but also instills confidence and self-discipline in young people. At the PAL, students learn from experienced boxing coaches and police officers who challenge them physically and mentally in a safe environment. Many of our students have even joined the competitive boxing circuit!
One of the most important programs at the PAL is our Gardening & Nutrition program. Centered in our expansive outdoor garden (on property where abandoned drug houses once stood), children are learning alongside adult mentors how to grow and prepare food for their families and their futures.
PAL kids are planting, growing and harvesting vegetables, fruits and plants in dozens of raised beds, vineyards, fruit trees and a greenhouse. They’re tending to chickens and eggs in our coop, and helping our police officer beekeepers tend to the hives so they can show kids how to harvest valuable local honey. The garden produces more than 2,000 lbs. of produce, 1,500 eggs and 150 lbs. of honey each year. PAL kids are learning how to grow food organically and use it for healthy meals.
In both our renovated kitchen and our outdoor kitchen classroom, kids are learning how to use and store their harvested produce and prepare healthy meals and snacks for their families and in our
Community Dinner program. For kids who haven’t learned much about healthy eating, our farm-to-table education program is a veritable learning lab for them.
For generations, the fertile soil of the Strawberry Hill neighborhood in KCK has fed families in our community. It’s doing so again for the hundreds of kids who enjoy the fun of participating in our Gardening & Nutrition program during growing season.

To enroll in this program, parent/guardian must complete PAL membership application and request Gun Safety & Marksmanship as a preferred program.
Police officers understand the problems of gun violence and accidents, which occur at a higher rate in the inner city and in areas of poverty. Because our youth participants at the PAL have a greater chance of encountering guns than youth in suburban counties, the Police Athletic League is taking a leadership role in this effort to curb youth gun violence in our Kansas City, Kansas community.
Our program at the PAL focuses on gun safety and marksmanship. We prepare PAL participants to handle a weapon safely if necessary -- what to do, how to be safe, how to report and how to use properly and safely during program training. The class is led by two active duty police officers in an indoor shooting range inside the PAL-KCK, and students are outfitted with targets, eye safety glasses, gun locks and air rifles. In addition to offering kids a combination of physical and mental skill development, the program helps youths gain a respectful understanding of safe gun use for sport.
The program also opens the door to other PAL-KCK programs that share the fundamentals of hunting while educating participants about safety, local conservation and wildlife. Class instruction size is limited, so inquire below about availability.
The PAL’s Hunting program is an advanced program for students who successfully complete the required PAL Gun Safety & Marksmanship program taught by experienced instructors and police officers who focus on safety and accountability.
Upon completing the marksmanship component of the program, participants are eligible to attend the Kansas Hunter Safety Course. The reward for all this hard work and dedication is the chance to go on real hunts with PAL officers, with all equipment and transportation provided. The learning, mentoring and friendships that result from these unforgettable day trips build character and resilience as few other experiences can, and prepare students to respect and enjoy the sport for a lifetime.
The sport of hunting is much more than meets the eye. It teaches attention to detail, builds confidence and a strong sense of responsibility. Teaching kids to hunt when they’re young gives them a deeper appreciation for the natural world and their place in it.

To enroll in this program, parent/guardian must complete PAL membership application and request Fishing & Camping as a preferred program. Must be a resident of Kansas.
Recent studies have shown the significant benefits of outdoor recreational programs for inner-city kids, helping them to unplug from screens and tune into nature to relieve stress and the pressures of teenage life. The PAL fishing & camping programs are summer/fall programs that help kids learn the sport of fishing, and how to set up an outdoor camp. At the same time, they build camaraderie and good relationships with peers and adult mentors.
Fishing is well known for its therapeutic value, and simply spending time outdoors is healthy and calming and can promote a stronger sense of well-being. PAL-KCK kids will learn the ins and outs of a rod and reel, tackle and casting. After mastering the basics, PAL officers and mentors will take participants on fishing trips to test their skills and have a good time while enjoying the beauty of nature.
Our camping program is a good companion activity for our anglers. For most of the inner-city kids at the PAL, experiencing the thrill of camping in a tent under the stars is a far-away dream. PAL-KCK provides the gear and training, as officers and qualified volunteers train kids how to set up and tear down a camp, cook outdoors, and maintain good conservation practices, while they’re building new relationships and overcoming challenges.
This is an invitation-only program for PAL participants who demonstrate regular participation in other programs.
Young people living in urban KCK neighborhoods lack transportation options that affect their ability to get to school, work or work interviews, grocery stores and other locations. They also tend to face increased opportunities for violence and crime, greater levels of stress and isolation in their homes, and lack exposure to role models and mentorship. The lack of mobility and accessibility inhibits positive opportunities for youth, so the PAL created a Low Rider Bicycle Club as a proven deterrent to criminal activity and gang violence.
Using evidence-based research, the PAL created our Low-Rider Bicycle Club as an “earn a bike” program that allows youth to build, repair and use custom low-rider bicycles which they will own upon completion of service hours and graduation of high school. This popular and fun program gives kids access to affordable, sustainable means of transportation in addition to practical and marketable skills in design and mechanics. Led by police officers who mentor them while teaching bike mechanics and building, students develop new skills and achieve a sense of mobility and self-worth from their experience working and learning in our community bike shop. The program currently is held on Wed. from 3:30 - 5:30pm. Capacity is limited.
