About
A Dynamic Partnership with the community
Police Athletic Leagues across the U.S. help build trust between law enforcement and communities, especially with youth. Since we opened our doors in 2018, the Police Athletic League of Kansas City, Kansas has become one of the nation’s strongest, offering a safe space in the urban core where kids ages 8–18 can avoid crime and build skills through free, fun and educational programs.
Our mission is to be positive role models for the next generation. Just as many of us were shaped by a coach or mentor, we aim to inspire confidence, leadership, and resilience in local youth. Based in historic Strawberry Hill, we’re proud to carry forward our city’s legacy and help young people grow, succeed, and give back.

Built in 1890, Rebuilt in 2019
History
The Police Athletic League of Kansas City, Kansas, is based in the historic St. Mary’s Church, built in 1890 in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood. As the first Catholic church in Wyandotte County, it served an ethnically diverse community of Croatian, Irish, Polish, Russian, and other immigrant families at the turn of the 20th century. After sitting vacant for more than 20 years, the building was repurposed in 2017 as a safe, welcoming space for youth. Since then, extensive renovations have transformed the church and surrounding grounds into a vibrant hub for mentorship, programs, and community connection.
“Great kids. Historic neighborhood. Beautiful building. It’s the best of every possible scenario,” says Executive Director, Matt Tomasic.

How does the Driver's Education program work at the KCK PAL?
Driver’s Ed at the KCK PAL is designed to give youth hands-on experience and mentorship while giving back to the community. Here’s how it works:
Earn Your Way In: Students complete 30 hours of community service at the PAL to become eligible for the class.
Attend the Class: Once eligible, students join a Driver’s Ed class, which is offered once a month.
Take the Test: After completing the class, students take a written test to prepare for their learner’s permit.
Get Your Permit: Those who pass visit the DMV the following week with KCK PAL police officers to receive their learner’s permit.
Behind the Wheel: Students then complete a minimum of six hours of supervised driving with police officers to gain real-world experience and confidence on the road.
This step-by-step approach ensures that each student gains knowledge, practice, and mentorship while learning to drive safely.
